Story
The year is 1937. It’s a warm summer evening in Hawaii and the racial climate is even hotter. Hester Murdoch, a troubled young white woman with marital problems, takes a stroll on a Honolulu beach ostensibly to get a breath of fresh air and put a little distance between her and her Navy lieutenant husband. The stroll turns into an amorous romp with another Navy officer (her husband’s best friend) who rapes and severely beats Hester.
Four young Hawaiian youths, who happen to be on the beach, come upon the naked, helpless woman and, reluctantly, offer their help. The innocent bystanders are eventually accused and indicted for her assault, battery and rape. As authorities attempt to sort out the facts, Doris Ashley, Hester’s very powerful and prominent socialite mother, intercedes to manipulate the proceedings.
Doris is more concerned about her family’s reputation than about the lives and futures of the four boys … or about the truth. Doris is also able to conceal Hester’s secret–a pregnancy from her long-running affair with her husband’s friend.
Later, during the trial of the four Hawaiian boys, Hester’s husband, in an uncontrolled fit of rage, pulls a gun in the courtroom and kills one of the defendants. A novice Hawaiian attorney is in for the fight of his life. A Navy commandant–a friend of Doris’–tries to sort out what is a military matter and what is not. And a determined local chief of detectives is out to serve justice.
